Notes: Night Flight IV was recorded on December 20, 2004 at Bert
Elliott Sound in Atlanta, GA. Final mixdown and mastering was performed on December 22, 2004. As a "live" studio
album, all songs were recorded with only one take and without any overdubbing. This is quite unusual in the modern
digital studio and testifies to Bert's great skills in getting it right the first time! Post production consisted only of
mixing, final equalization, adding the special effects on tracks 1, 6 and 7, and removing a few random "pops" and "thumps".
The concept was to provide the listener an experience that simulates an actual performance as closely as possible, while preserving
studio quality audio. Some reviewers have noted that this mix is "quieter" or "softer" than heard on many other CDs.
This is not due to incorrect levels on the CD. The reason for this effect is that no compression was used in mastering
the final disk image. Most CDs today, even those of very high quality, often use compression to make the recording more
listenable in a car or other noisy background environment. Compression limits the natural dynamic range of the music
in exchange for giving it more percieved "loudness". Due to the wide range of dynamics in the compositions on this recording,
we chose not to use compression. Therefore, you may find you will need to turn up the volume on your playback
equipment to a higher setting than you are accustomed to for other recordings. We hope this extra effort will be rewarded
by an enhanced listening experience.
